P2 Service

Audio Guide by Kosuke Nagata
In project 1 we considered how a souvenir, and gift giving, can represent a place and a social relationship. In its design we considered social context, history, and our own perspectives, to create a unique "memento" that gets at something more nuanced in our relationship to Jeju Island.

In project 2, we'll take our mementos, and construct a "service" around how they are to be experienced. Service Design refers to the holisitic offering of a business (or other service provider), including staff, space, and communications, that go into creating an experience. This concept is often represented with a "Front of the House" and "Back of the House" metaphor borrowed from theater – while we as an audience are seeing what's happening on the stage, there is an immense amount of complex and vibrant work happening behind the scenes that goes into the "performance". In this project we will create the "Back of the House" infrastructure with which we will present our souvenirs.

Dark Content by Eva and Franco Mattes
To do this, we will create two group outcomes: an audio guide based on our souvenirs (or something inspired by our souvenirs); and an exhibition showcasing our works. In both cases we will design the infrastructure around which they are accessed and received, as well as redesign our souvenirs as needed. We will split into two groups – one leading the audio guide development and one leading the exhibition. Everyone will create an audio piece, and display their souvenir, for the audio guide and the exhibit.

Some things to keep in mind when approaching this project...
- The metaphor of the "Front of the House" and "Back of the House" is based on the premise of hiding labor and obfusticating the entirety of an experience. Is this something we want to embrace or question?
- Keep in mind the full extent of a service, which covers the expected such as spatial and graphic design, and may also extend to things such as uniforms, sounds and scent. How can we embrace this expansive perspective of design, in order to make the most accessible exhibition possible.
- Service design is often focused on efficiency, consistency, and reproducibility with the goal of maximizing profit and limiting the unexpected. How can our services embrace and reject these notions? What's gained from this ethos of predictablity, and what would be gained by embracing chance and the unknown?
- The audio guide and exhibition can overlap. While the audio works we make with Yo-E may be more expansive than what would make sense for an audio guide in the show, there is a natural overlap and precedent for audio guides in exhibition spaces.
Learning Outcomes
- Consider a design experience holistically
- Explore how the immaterial and transient experience of a product can be considered
- Design for indeterminacy and reproducibility
- Experiment with material transformations, and designing for different "spaces" (physical and digital)
Requirements
Individual deliverables:
- Audiopiece (started during the workshop with Yo-E Ryou)
- Updated/finalized souvenir from P1
Group deliverables:
- Container to distribute audio works (the audio guide) – this could be: a physical distribution method such as a CD, or flashdrive; or a digital one such as a website or app. In both cases we will design the information architecture and UX for accessing the audio guide, and the visual identity, UI, and all other "touchpoints" for the audio works.
- Exhibition design and collateral to showcase your works at (salt) – this will include: exhibition identity, guide/pamphlet, routines/protocols for the exhibition's setup (music, docent uniforms, etc.), and all other attributes of the "Exhibitionary Apparatus"
- A "service blueprint" for the both the show and the audio guide (one made by each group)
Project
Project Kickoff: Thurs May 9
Discuss project brief
Step 1: Thurs May 17-19
Workshop with Yo-E Ryou at Unlearning Space (make sure to prepare mini-assignment from Yo-e!)
Finalize groups and define the following roles in each:
Audio Guide
- Visual Design
- UI/UX
- Production
- Copywriting
Exhibition
- Visual Design
- Spatial Design
- Production
- Marketing
Step 2: Due Thurs May 23
Service Blueprint + Proposals: In your groups define 2 concepts for your project (audio guide or exhibition). Your concepts can be more theoretical – such as an audio guide that requires physical movement to play, or an exhibition that only exists as audio. Or practical – an audio guide made as a series of flash drives with MP3s, or an exhibition that is easily mailed.
After you've defined your two concepts create a "Service Blueprint" for each. A Service Blueprint:
"is a diagram that visualizes the relationships between different service components — people, props (physical or digital evidence), and processes — that are directly tied to touchpoints in a specific customer journey." – Nielsen Norman Group
In the process, consider the framing of a "service provider" and "customer" and if there are other configurations or terms you would like to apply to this relationship
Step 3: Due Thurs May 30
Rough Draft: Select a proposal and create a rough draft showcasing your ideas. This should include updates from all groups, clearly showcasing your ideas along with a plan to execute them.
Step 4: Due Thurs June 20
Launch audio guide and collect all materials for the exhibition at (salt)
